Rockman EXE Phantom of Network (AKA Mega Man Battle Network Phantom of Network) is the first original mobile phone game release for the Mega Man Battle Network series.

Ahead of the game's initial release, a free trial version was made available on i-mode which features a battle tutorial with Ms. Mari.

The main game was initially released on October 4, 2004 on i-mode in an episodic format, with Chapters 1 and 2 available at launch and a new chapter released approximately every 2 weeks. To play the game, a monthly subscription (¥315/month) was required. In addition, new chapters could be purchased for 100 BP (Battler Points), while Request BBS jobs cost 20 BP. Players initially received 300 BP for free when signing up, and 300 BP on the 1st of every month thereafter. Later in 2005, the option to purchase additional Battler Points separately was added; 100 BP for ¥105 or 300 BP for ¥315, with a maximum of 1000 BP. Battler Points could also be used to buy phone wallpapers, ringtones and i-motion (video clips).[12]

The game also had a side application, Rockman EXE Phantom of Network Battlers Tower, initially released on i-mode on January 11, 2005. This game uses the player's data from the main game. It can download other player's MegaMan data, which then can be fought in a simulated battle. It had a points system that let a player increase their battler rank. There is a Time Attack Mode for battles against the Navi bosses and it also contains a detailed database of the Navis.

On November 24, 2005, the game and the trial version were re-released on EZweb as native BREW applications. This version also requires a monthly subscription (¥315/month) to play. While new chapters still cost 100 BP, Request BBS jobs did not cost BP in this version. Wallpapers and ringtones could be purchased for 25 BP per item. This version also gave 300 BP when signing up, plus 300 BP on the 1st of every month thereafter. Additional BP could be purchased for 100 BP for ¥105 or 600 BP for ¥525.[13]

On November 2, 2009, the game was re-released again on i-mode, this time as a single purchase version with all chapters and Request BBS jobs included.

The game’s 8 story chapters are denoted by these respective bosses at the end:

  1. FireMan - "Resurrected Threat"
  2. IceMan - "A Hot Burning Heart!"
  3. WoodMan - "The NetBattle Tournament Is Here!"
  4. HatMan - "Inseverable Bonds"
  5. ShadowMan - "The Network Phantom"
  6. JammingMan - "Signal Interference by Signal Jamming"
  7. DrillMan - "Beyond the Abnormal Space!"
  8. Final Boss - "Operation Mobile"
