There are multiple Localization Changes made for the Mega Man Battle Network series as they made their way to regions outside of Japan. Unless stated otherwise, most changes made to North American version also made it to European version.
It’s also of note that many bug fixes have also been made in the international versions, which can be found in each game’s respective glitch pages.
Mega Man Battle Network 1
- The element chip icons are changed to the ones used in Mega Man Battle Network 2 and later. Most notable change is the non-elemental icon.
- When booting up the game, there is now a small delay before Press Start can be selected.
- When you save the game, it now asks you to confirm overwriting your existing save.
- In Waterworks Comp 5, the Blue Mystery Data containing 1000z now spawns in the first run through the dungeon instead of appearing in Chapter 5 and later.
European Changes
- An Ubisoft logo has been added to the start up sequence, after the Capcom logo.
- The Title Screen copyright info is slightly different.
Mega Man Battle Network 2
- The jack in sequence is changed.
- The boss rush fights in Apartment Comps now use the boss battle theme rather than the normal virus battle theme.
- In the Japanese version, throwing a TreeBomb chip into the same panel where a Prism chip lies will have the TreeBomb continuously hitting the Prism, until the Wood Tower rises up. This can basically delete any enemy. In NA/EU versions, TreeBomb will disappear when it hits Prism, dealing 1 hit.
European Changes
- An Ubisoft logo has been added to the start up sequence, after the Capcom logo.
- Note: the Wii U Virtual Console rerelease in Europe uses the North American version of the game, so the Ubisoft logo is not present.
- The Title Screen copyright info is slightly different.
Mega Man Battle Network 3
- The unique animation before the title screen is missing entirely and is not replaced. Also, no part of title screen is animated.
- Game Over has been changed entirely and has no animation.
- Jack in sequence is removed.
- Navi Customizer intro is removed.
- All Title Screen Marks completion image after defeating AlphaΩ is removed.
- The LOTTE posters in the metroline have been modified to no longer have LOTTE written on them.
- The food stand visual in Yoka has been changed.
Japanese | NA/EU | |
---|---|---|
White | Takoyaki | Corn dogs |
Blue | Okonomiyaki | Corn-on-a-cob |
- In the WWW Comps, if MegaMan gets caught by Alpha in the Japanese version, he does an animation of trying to get out. In the NA/EU version, MegaMan only has a non-moving sprite.
- A number of Program Advances are considered Navi Chips by NaviRecycle, they have been changed in the NA/EU versions. However these PAs can still trigger AntiNavi (with the exception of BodyGuard, which couldn’t trigger AntiNavi in Japanese version either).
NaviRecycle (JP) | NaviRecycle (NA/EU) | AntiNavi | Navi+ | |
---|---|---|---|---|
BigHeart | Yes | No | Yes | No |
PrixPowr | Yes | No | Yes | No |
BodyGrd | Yes | No | No | No |
European Changes
- The Title Screen copyright info is slightly different.
Mega Man Battle Network 4
- The Battle Chip Gate wasn't sold international, but a Japanese version will still unlock all its features in the international games.
- All Card e-Reader content are inaccessible. However, BassXX is available in the Virtual Console version.
- The visual for the Takoyaki stand in DenDome is changed to a Hot Dog stand.
- Since the visual is changed, SparkMan scenario’s passcode answers for “Number of Hotdogs/Takoyaki” have also been changed.
- In the Observation Room of NAXA, an English Battle Chip Challenge Navi Code for Hub Style is added.
- In the Boktai side quest, Master Otenko’s “Taiyoh!” sound clip has been removed.
- NormalNavi and HeelNavi enemy names are now labeled with their version numbers, in the Japanese version none of them have version numbers.
- Shield and Reflect’s cool down time between use is extended a bit.
- In the Japanese version, if you hold A to activate Slasher and an AntiDamage trap is active, you will be immune to all attacks (not including HP drain). Your Double Soul will also not dissipate after 3 turns. This effect ends once you let go of A and will shoot the shuriken. In the NA/EU versions, it executes the shuriken attack as soon as damage is received instead of after releasing the A Button.
- The MB for two of the Lightning chips have been changed.

- Gargoyle Comp 2 is removed. Gargoyle Comp 3 becomes Gargoyle Comp 2 and so forth.
- A Purple Mystery Data in Oran Area 1 has its position moved slightly.
- DarkSoul actually has 500 HP when it is summoned. In the JP version, if a LifeSync is used during a virus battle on a Dark Soul from a failed Chaos Unison charge, all of their ally viruses’ HP will become Dark Soul’s current HP. In the NA/EU version, LifeSync will target Dark Soul but HPs will not be altered.
- In the JP version, if BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, all bugs including Mod Card bugs are fixed. Disadvantageous effects such as Minus HP will still occur. In the NA/EU versions, if BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, only bugs in the NaviCust are fixed.

European Changes
- Completely different logo and title screen.
Mega Man Battle Network 5: Double Team DS
- All removed and altered Cyberworld areas in BN5GBA are undone. The repositioned Purple Mystery Data in Oran Area 1 has been moved back.
- All voices have been replaced with an English voice cast.
- Intro's music got changed from the segment of Be Somewhere by Buzy (EXE Stream OP) to a segment of THEME OF ROCKMAN EXE ~TGS2002 mix~. The length was slightly edited in order to keep the music in sync.
- SolCross MegaMan is accessible through Boktai 2 W Slot instead of the non-existant Boktai 3 (Shin Bokura no Taiyoh).
- The Rockman EXE 4.5 Real Operation W Slot function cannot be accessed as the game was not localized.
- To make it up, the BN5 Team ProtoMan's W Slot functions boosts SearchMan and NumberMan's special chip instead of ToadMan/Meddy's.
- Due to this, that game is not needed to unlock BassXX's requirement of slotting in every Battle Network game.
European Changes
- French, German, Italian, Spanish language support have been added. The voices remain in English.
- The font has been redone.
- For some cases, a button icon is used in the font instead of the usual typed out text.

- English language has a different hint for the Ship Password.

"Double 1 & nine too tonight makes eleven." | "11 minus 9 is 2. 2 plus 9 is straight lines." |
Mega Man Battle Network 6
- All features of the Beast Link Gate are inaccesible.
- The mini maps and their boards in every Net area have been removed.

- The visual for the Taiyaki stand is changed to a Fish Sticks stand.
- A Green Mystery Data in Graveyard 2's position was moved slightly.
- AirSpin BattleChips now has 400 HP instead of 300 HP.
- When the RiskyHoney BattleChips is paired up with the AntiDamage chip and receives damage, it now executes the shuriken attack after the extra bee attacks, instead of before.
- In the JP version, if the Chip Trader’s probability is to give a chip you have but in a code you don’t have, it won’t give you the 4th code variation. In the NA/EU version, the 4th code has a chance of being given.
Boktai Content
- A number of Boktai related content has been removed. Although the GunDelS Standard chips and Django's poster in Lan's room remains.
- The related BattleChips: GunDelEX, Otenko, Django1, Django2, Django3, Count, CountEX, CountSP, and the CrosOver Program Advance are removed from the game.
- All the distribution of the Django chips are replaced with other chips. Apprentice Folder has its Django D chips swapped out for GunDelS2 R chips.
- Due to an oversight, the CountSP chip (written in-game as HackJckSP) can still be obtained in a Gold Mystery Data.
- The Count boss battles have been removed.

- Immortal Area and its corresponding scenario is removed. The BatKey which opened the area, now opens a door in Graveyard instead.

- Graveyard 1 is removed, making Graveyard 2 the only existing Graveyard area.
- The GBeast/FBeast ghost encounters are moved to Underground 1. NetMerchant is moved to Graveyard 2. BugFrag Trader is moved to Underground 2.
- This also removes the mark of "M" door that opens the path from Graveyard 1 to 2, solving the potential of a game-breaking glitch in the Japanese version.

European Changes
- The logo replaces the ® with a TM.
Mega Man Battle Chip Challenge
- The keyboard for code registration has been modified.
- Some alphabet letters (A E I O U) have been replaced with symbols: Spade (A), Club (E), Heart (I), Star (O), Diamond (U).
- There is no Japanese text input, so NaviCodes with Japanese names cannot be inputted. NaviCodes from N1 Battle and Battle Chip GP with English names will still work.
- For Hackers N Open Battle #5, instead of a fight versus Pride and KnightMan, it's against Yuji and his NormNav5.
- From this fight, the NormNav5 Chip can now be obtained normally as a battle reward. Originally, to obtain the Navi Chip, a N1 Battle NaviCode with the same name and Normal Navi V5 equipped needed to be inputted in Battle Start.
European Changes
- Completely different logo and title screen.
Mega Man Network Transmission
- The text warning regarding eye strain and seizures at the start up has been removed.
- The Rockman EXE anime 1st opening movie that appears after waiting out the title screen is removed. The loop to the title screen just begins.
- Some voiced lines that involves Japanese names and terms are removed. As well as Lan's voiced monologue at the start and end of the game.
Trivia
- The international versions of the GBA games are worked on by the Japanese game staff. According to the game developers, the removal of content in overseas versions are due to having so much text that they ran out of a space. The Jack in animation has been cited as something they had to cut.[1]
