Patch Cards in Mega Man Battle Network 5
From The Rockman EXE Zone Wiki
Using the e-Reader+, both versions of Mega Man Battle Network 5 can scan e-Reader cards to further customize their MegaMan, as well as other features. In the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, this feature is called Patch Cards.
In the Wii U Virtual Console version of Mega Man Battle Network 5, the BassCross MegaMan Mod Card is obtainable in all regions of the game by opening the Comm. menu in the PET screen.
Information
Card e-Reader for Battle Network 5 come in 3 categories: Mod Cards, Item Cards, and Rare Chip Distribution Cards.
Mod and Item Cards were released in two parts via booster packs. Promotion and Rare Chip Distribution cards were given with specific EXE merchandise such as the Progress Chip Gate, and special events in Japan.
Mod Cards
AKA Patch Cards. Mod Cards can be used to enhance your MegaMan with Abilities not possible normally. Unlike how Mod Cards worked in the EXE4, with slots for cards, EXE5 Introduced an MB system.
Each card now has a certain MB value, with MegaMan having a storage limit of 80 MB. Cards with higher MB generally have better Abilities. Individual cards can be turned on or off when needed, but this does not lower their MB use. This means that previous cards must be deleted when scanning new mod cards. All Mod Card effects take place after NaviCust changes.
Mod Card Menu
Entering a Mod Card will unlock a 4th screen in the MegaMan menu that will show a detailed status. This screen will remain even if all Mod Cards are deleted. All of MegaMan’s accumulated stats, current active abilities, and current bugs will be shown here.
Bass XX
If any Mod Cards are active, a stronger version of Bass, BassXX (read as Bass Double X), can be encountered in Nebula Area 6 instead of BassΩ. This encounter can be LocEnemy, then players can fight BassXX using non-Mod MegaMan in later encounters.
BugStop
In the Japanese version: If BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, all bugs including Mod Card bugs are fixed. Disadvantageous effects such as Minus HP will still occur.
In the English version: If BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, only bugs in the NaviCust are fixed. This is the same as Mod Cards in Battle Network 6.

Trivia
- This feature was locked out of the English GBA versions but the data of the cards have been left untouched.
- Since Mega Man Battle Network 1 do not list enemy names, these cards are the first instance of some MMBN1 viruses to have names in-game. While they were written in the Japanese guidebooks, this is the first instance of them ever having official English names.
- For some reason in the English game's data, some previously named viruses are renamed:
- Spooky > Ghost
- CanDevil > Candela
- If BassCross MegaMan is active in Network Duels, instead of usual MegaMan enemy tag, the opponent will have BassCross MegaMan appear as BCMegaMn.
- In the data, the name ModMegaM (かいぞうロックマン) also exists but is unused. Mod MegaMan (改造ロックマン) is used in official material when referring to MegaMan with Mod Cards.
- Due to BugStop ceasing battle bugs in the Japanese version, its usage was banned in official Japanese tournaments that utilized Mod Cards. Director Masahiro Yasuma states it was done to maximize enjoyment of Mod Card pros and cons, as well as the importance of the order they are put in[1].
